Jamaluddin, one of the bullet wound victims from Rupganj succumbed to injuries at Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital yesterday afternoon.
Jamaluddin (26), was among 14 who sustained bullet wounds during the fierce clashes between villagers and law-enforcers in Rupganj .upzila under Naryanganj on Saturday.
Jamal was first rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Saturday afternoon.
Later he was shifted to Pangu Hospital and finally removed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital as his condition deteriorated. He died there at about 1pm on Sunday. The body was sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
In reprisal for the violence, about 3,000 to 4,000 people of the area were sued by the local police. Source said Rupganj thana SI Syed Munsef Ali filed the case on Saturday night, accusing the large number of unidentified people of involvement in the clashes. But police did not arrest anybody till filing the report at 8pm yesterday.
It is learnt that Rupganj MP Gazi Golam Dastagir visited the hospital and donated Tk 20,000 to the victim’s family members.
Tense situation has been prevailing in the area following the clashes between the villagers and law enforcers.. Local sources said that all business establishments and shops remain closed in protest of he incident. Additional contingent of police were deployed in the area to avoid any further violence
At least 50 people were injured including 14 bullet-struck, in a series of clashes between the villagers and law enforcers over alleged forced purchase of land for an army housing scheme in Rupganj on Saturday.
RAB and police personnel fired to drive off hordes of aggressive crowds who dismantled makeshift camps on the project site, hemmed in the police station, halted traffic on the local road amid the troubles.
Meanwhile, Rupganj police SI Mohammad Munsef filed a case on Saturday accusing some 3,000 or unidentified people for vandalism, loot and arson.
Police said additional forces have been deployed in the area to maintain order. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police have been patrolling the area since Sunday morning. Earlier on Saturday, severe clash erupted between police and demonstrators who blocked the Rupganj-Ichhapura road for about four hours demanding cancellation of the government decision to acquire about 6,000 bighas of land for an army housing project.
The military personnel deployed there had been obstructed for over five hours before they were evacuated by helicopter. The mob set the camp into fire.
The police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) brought the situation under control around noon when they opened fire, charged batons and fired tear-shells on about 10,000 prorestors.
Former MP of the area, also a former army chief K M Shafiullah, told the reporters that the incident occurred over a misunderstanding.
On the other hand, current MP Golam Dastagir, a freedom fighter, and ruling Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif alleged that the main opposition BNP had instigated the locals to protest and demonstrate.
