At least five people including four police personnel were injured in a gunfight between police and a gang of muggers early Friday at Zia Nagar village of Keraniganj, an outskirt of the city. The injured were identified as sub-inspectors Abul Kalam Azad and Aminul Islam, constables Abdul Matin and M Safur of Keraniganj Model Police Station. Besides, a member of the gang Noor Hossain, 28, son of Nurul Haque of the village, was also bullet-hit. Police arrested bullet-injured Noor Hossain. Mohammad Mainuddin, officer-in-charge of Keranigaj Model Police Station, told The Independent, “Being tipped off that a gang of criminals was holding a clandestine meeting to commit robbery, a team of police conducted a drive at the village at around 11:30pm.”
“Sensing the presence of law enforcers, Noor and his accomplices opened fire on the police forcing them to retaliate which triggered a gunfight between the police and criminals. It continued for about half an hour leaving four police personnel and terrorist group member Noor injured,” Mainuddin added.
Noor, hit by a bullet on his right leg, was admitted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, known as Pangu Hospital, for treatment.
Noor was not only a notorious terrorist of the area, but also a drug dealer, accused in two cases, Mohammad Mainuddin added.
The injured officials, however, are out of danger as they took treatment from Keraniganj Upazila Health Complex. Police also recovered 96 bottles of Phensydle, one shutter gun and a machete from the scene.
Two separate cases were filed with Keraniganj Police Station in this connection.
