More than 50 apparel workers were injured in a clash with the police at Manipur of Hotapara in Gazipur sadar on Wednesday.
Three apparel factories were closed for the day because of the clash that broke out with workers rallying for an increase in their monthly wage to Tk 8,000. The clash continued for about an hour.
Local people said that several thousand workers of KCO Pyia Apparels, a concern of the Elegance Industrial Group, went on strike and demonstrations outside the factory in the morning.
When the workers tried to block the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway, the police stopped them doing so, triggering the clash. The workers pelted the police with stones.
The police charged at the workers with truncheons and fired tear shells to disperse them. At least 50 workers were injured, witnesses said.
The worker said that they would not join work until the authorities made any announcement on their wage increase.
Gazipur Industrial police assistant superintendent Mosaraf Hossain said that more than 5,000 workers tried block the highway and the police dispersed them.
The authorities of Jahin Tex and Givency Fashion suspended their production for the day. The injured were sent to hospital.
Earlier on Tuesday, at least 10 workers were injured as the police fired rubber bullets into demonstrations the workers held demanding wage increase.
