Mortar explodes during training
Two army and four Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were killed and 10 others injured as a mortar shell exploded accidentally during an exercise at Ghatail
Cantonment in Tangail yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Manjur, senior warrant officer, and Parvez, a junior non-commissioned officer of the Bangladesh Army, and Mohammad Ali, Abu Sufian,
Anwar Hossain Palash and Mohammad Ali Jinnah of the BGB. The deceased army men were in charge of maintaining the firing range, said an Inter Services Public Relations
(ISPR) release.
Seven of the injured were airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka as their condition was stated to be critical.
Officer In-Charge (OC) of Ghatail Police Station Fazlul Kabir told reporters an annual training of Dinajpur Sector 247 BGB was going on at the Shaheed Salah Uddin
Cantonment of Ghatail.
“As part of the exercise, a live-firing training was being held at Satkoya Chok of Maitherchala village of Shandhawnpur union of Ghatail upazila. At 12:00 noon an 82mm
mortar shell exploded in the firing range,” the OC said narrating the incident.
Army officers Manjur and Parvez and BGB members Ali, Sufian and Palash were killed and 11 others injured in the incident, he said.
The injured were taken to Ghatail CMH and then seven of them, including Jinnah, were shifted to Dhaka CMH by a helicopter, the OC added. Jinnah died there at 11pm. BGB
Chief Major General Aziz Ahmed and senior army officers visited the spot.
