Decides govt to tackle electricity crisis during Ramadan
The CNG filling stations across the country will remain closed between 3:00pm and 9:00pm for nearly a month starting from the first day of Ramadan as part of a government initiative to improve gas supply to power stations and tackle power crisis.
At present, the closing time for CNG stations is from 5:00pm to 9:00pm.
The decision of extending the closure period by two hours came at a meeting between Petrobangla, Bangladesh CNG Filling Station and Conversion Workshop Owners’ Association and gas companies at Petrobangla Office in the capital yesterday.
“The Petrobangla chairman said that the CNG stations will return to the four-hour closure period after 27th of Ramadan,” Zakir Hossain Nayan, general secretary of the association, told The Daily Star.
He also said the meeting decided to ensure maximum power supply during iftar, sehri and tarabih prayers in the holy month.
According to the government statistics, there are 556 operational CNG stations in the country, selling 2,000 million cubic metres of gas that is 6 percent of the country’s average daily production.
The government has to ration gas as the country faces supply shortfall of 500 million cubic feet per day.
Hossain Mansur, chairman of Petrobangla and Shafiul Islam Kamal, president of the association, among others, were present at the meeting.
