Six candidates are going to vie for the mayoral post in the Rajshahi City Corporation elections scheduled to be held on June 15.
Seven candidates had collected the nomination paper but six candidates submitted it on Sunday, the last day for nomination paper submission.Among the six are Rajshahi city Awami League general secretary and outgoing mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, BNP city unit general secretary Shafikul Haque Milon, Juba Dal convener Mossaddek Hossain Bulbul, detained Rajshahi city Jamaat general secretary Mohammad Jahangir and two independent candidates Habibur Rahman and Mozammel Haque.
Besides, a total of 176 nomination papers were submitted against 30 posts of general ward councilors and 69 nomination papers against 10 reserved posts of woman councilors, said Suvash Chandra Sarkar, regional election commissioner.
Former mayor of Rajshahi BNP joint-secretary Mizanur Rahman Minu is not participating in the polls although he was the maiden elected mayor who had served for 17 years.
Talking to New Age Mizanur Rahman Minu, also a former lawmaker, said he was not going to race for the polls following the decision of his party.
