Nine students including three leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chhata Dal (JCD) of Rajshahi University (RU) unit were injured as Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists on Wednesday attacked a JCD procession.
Of the injured, the condition of JCD convener Arafat Reza Ashiq is critical, reports our RU correspondent.
Sources said over one hundred BCL leaders and activists along with police attacked the JCD procession at around 11.45am when it was heading towards university Folklore Chattar protesting the police attack on JCD men on March 27 that left nine JCD men injured.
BCL men and also chased the JCD men to the university’s Kazla gate and threw brickbats to them.
Protesting the incident, JCD men gathered on the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of the Kazla gate at around 12:00pm and blocked the highway till 1:00pm.
The agitated JCD supporters also vandalised a bus of the university on the highway.
On information, police rushed to the spot charged baton to disperse them. JCD men also hurled brickbats at the police.
JCD convener Arafat Reza Ashiq claimed that Proctor Prof Chowdhury Muhammad Zakaria provoked the attack.
The proctor, however, said police dispersed the procession as JCD men held procession defying restrictions on activities of students’ bodies on the campus.
Rabiul Islam, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station, said they charged baton on JCD leaders and activists as they (JCD) were trying to create anarchy on the campus.
Earlier on March 27, police attacked on JCD procession leaving at least nine leaders and activists including its convener while they brought out a procession on the campus demanding punishment to the BCL cadres, who stabbed JCD activist Ahasan Uzzaman alias Olin, on February 8.
