Corporate leader and sports organizer Rubaba Dowla has officially joined the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), stepping in for Isfak Ahsan, whose nomination was quietly pulled just hours after yesterday’s board election.
The NSC has pulled back his nomination due to claims about his connections with the ousted Awami League government.
As soon as photos of him at party events started popping up online, the backlash came quickly — and by early Tuesday, his name was already off the list.
In his place, the NSC has appointed Rubaba Dowla, a well-known figure in the corporate world and a champion for women’s sports, as of yesterday, Tuesday.
Rubaba Dowla is currently the country director for the multinational company Oracle, overseeing operations in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. Prior to this role, she held significant positions at major mobile operators like Grameen Phone and Airtel.
Rubaba Dowla was also involved in the world of sports. She held the position of president of the Bangladesh Badminton Federation from 2009 to 2015 and was a board member of the Bangladesh Special Olympics. Additionally, she took on the roles of chief communication officer and chief marketing officer at Grameenphone.
From 1998 to 2009, during her earlier time with the company, she became a well-known figure in Bangladesh’s cricket scene, representing the sponsoring organization. Grameenphone was the proud sponsor of the Bangladesh national cricket team from 2003 to 2011.
In 2007, Rubaba also played a key role in setting up the National Cricket Academy in Mirpur, a collaborative effort between Grameenphone and the BCB. It looks like Rubaba Dowla is set to take the lead in the women’s wing of the BCB.
