Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday evening reached Evercare Hospital to meet his ailing mother, Begum Khaleda Zia, former prime minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, at the hospital.
Tarique’s motorcade reached Evercare Hospital at about 5:50pm on Wednesday, as he directly came to the hospital after addressing a public reception held in the 300 Feet area of Purbachal in Dhaka.
Meanwhile, hundreds of leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its associate bodies gathered in front of the Evercare Hospital to welcome Tarique Rahman.
Md Abu Bakar Siddique Kayes, BNP Dhaka North City’s ward no. 21 joint secretary, said that he came to the hospital to welcome their leader, Tarique Rahman.
‘It is a matter of great joy that Tarique Rahman will come here to meet his mother. We pray for our leader Begum Khaleda’s swift recovery,’ he said.
Members of the police, the Bangladesh Army, the Rapid Action Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh and the Armed Police Battalion were deployed near the hospital to ensure security.
Khaleda was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis on November 27.
The 79-year-old leader, who has long been suffering from multiple chronic health complications, including liver and kidney diseases, heart ailments, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and recurrent infections, was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23.
Earlier, Tarique returned to Bangladesh from London with his wife, Zubaida Rahman, and daughter, Zaima Rahman, ending his 17 years of exile.
A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying them landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka via Sylhet at about 11:40am.
After landing in Dhaka, Tarique Rahman was received at the airport by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and senior party leaders, including members of the party’s standing committee.
They welcomed him at the VIP lounge of HSIA at about 11:55am.
His mother-in-law, Syeda Iqbal Mandu Banu, also welcomed him with a floral garland.
Strict security measures were taken at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and in nearby areas for his arrival.
Multiple layers of security were deployed around the VVIP terminal, with members of the army, Border Guard Bangladesh, air force, police and Rapid Action Battalion on duty.
RAB dog squads conducted searches, while a special army team was also stationed in the area.
In addition, the personal security force of the BNP chairperson and acting chairman, known as the CSF, was overseeing the overall security arrangements.
