The United States deported another 36 Bangladeshi nationals as part of its ongoing efforts against illegal immigration.
A special military flight from the US arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at noon on Tuesday (20 January), as stated in a press release from BRAC’s Migration Programme.
Among the 36 deportees, 21 were from Noakhali, two from Lakshmipur, and one each from Munshiganj, Dhaka, Lalmonirhat, Shariatpur, Barguna, Feni, Sirajganj, Gazipur, Kishoreganj, Tangail, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Netrokona. One of them is a woman.
This brings the total number of Bangladeshis deported from the US in 2025 to 293.
Many had sold land and jewelry or taken loans, spending between Tk40–45 lakh each, with some paying up to Tk60–80 lakh to reach the US, only to return home empty-handed, the release noted.
Returnee Zahidul Islam, from Noakhali, said he paid brokers nearly Tk 80 lakh, hoping to reach the US , while Sultana Akter from Gazipur said she paid Tk 30 lakh to brokers to cross the Mexico border through Brazil.
BRAC officials mentioned that most deportees initially traveled to Brazil legally with permission from the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET).
They then crossed the Mexico border illegally to enter the US and sought asylum.
However, after long legal battles, US authorities denied their asylum requests and opted to return them to Bangladesh.
