The government on Tuesday cancelled the appointment of Safiqur Rahman as managing director and chief executive officer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines and gave the additional secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Humaira Sultana, additional charge as MD and CEO of the national flag carrier.
As a result, Humaira becomes the first woman to hold the post in the national flag carrier’s 54-year history.
Safiqur was removed from the post following his arrest in a case filed over the alleged abuse of an 11-year-old domestic worker.
An office order issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism stated that Safiqur’s contractual appointment had been revoked, while Humaira has been given additional charge as MD and CEO of the national flag carrier to ensure uninterrupted operations.
Safiqur was arrested early Monday along with his wife in connection with allegations of torturing a child domestic worker at their home in the capital’s Uttara area. The police also arrested two other domestic workers of the household in the same case.
On Monday, the police produced the accused before a Dhaka court and sought their detention. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Raju Ahmed rejected their bail petitions and ordered them to be sent to jail.
A case was filed by the victim’s father, a hotel employee, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Uttara West Police Station on Sunday.
Safiqur, a retired official of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, was appointed as MD and CEO on a contractual basis in September 2024, after the fall of the Awami League regime amid a mass rising on August 5, 2024.
