President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed has formally invited Awami League President Sheikh Hasina to form a new government and take oath today at Bangabhaban.
The invitation was made over telephone at 12:30pm yesterday, Secretary to the President Md Sirajul Islam told reporters.
The President congratulated her (Sheikh Hasina) and invited her to form government as majority leader, Bangabhaban sources said.
President Iajuddin Ahmed will administer the oath to Sheikh Hasina and members of her cabinet at the Darbar Hall. at 6.30 PM, Cabinet Secretary MA Aziz will conduct the oath taking ceremony.
The Bangabhaban is fully ready for the oath-taking ceremony. The decoration and seating arrangements in the Darbar Hall of the Bangabhaban have also been completed. “Preparations for the oath-taking ceremony of the new cabinet is at the final stage,” the Cabinet Secretary said.
About 900 guests are expected to attend the ceremony and invitation letters have already been sent.
The invitees include former presidents, former chief advisers, chief justice, speaker, advisers, head of diplomatic missions, political leaders, senior civil and military officials, editors, freedom fighters and national award recipients.
As part of rehearsal of the oath- taking ceremony, a mock oath-taking ceremony was held at the Darbal Hall of Bangabhaban. Awami League won a landslide victory in the ninth parliamentary polls of December 29 bagging 230 seats out of 300.
Over 100 journalists from the print and electronic and foreign media will cover the landmark event.
Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will broadcast the ceremony live. Besides, the oath-taking ceremony will be shown live from three mega screens from different parts of the city including Bangabandhu Avenue and South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The AL-led grand alliance achieved massive victory in the December 29 parliamentary polls capturing 262 seats out of 300.
