BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will soon bring changes to the committees of the party’s associate bodies to make them more effective, party sources said.
There have been little activities of BNP’s front organisations as their leaders and activists are still in distress following the party’s debacle in the December 29 parliamentary election.
Party insiders said the BNP chairperson has already hinted that an announcement would come soon about formation of new committees of the party’s front organisations including Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal.
Changes will be made first to the BNP’s student wing JCD as the tenure of its committee had expired on January 1, last year, sources said.
“The chairperson might announce the new committee soon as the tenure of the present committee has already expired,” JCD General Secretary Shafiul Bari Babu told The Daily Star yesterday.
He said, “The chairperson usually announce the new committee after every two years but it could not be possible in the last two years because of an adverse situation.”
The BNP chairperson appointed Azizul Bari Helal and Shafiul Bari Babu as JCD president and general secretary on January 1, 2005.
Helal and JCD senior vice president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku contested the December 29 election as BNP candidates but none of them could win.
Party insiders said Khaleda Zia might announce a new committee for Jubo Dal after bringing changes to the JCD.
Jubo Dal President Barkatullah Bhulu was elected from Noakhali-3 constituency while its General Secretary Moazzem Hossain Alal was defeated in Dhaka-13.
BNP leaders said the party high-ups decided to bring changes to JCD and Jubo Dal as the leaders and workers of the two organisations are disheartened following the party’s defeat in the parliamentary elections.
BNP has 11 front organisations — Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, Mohila Dal. Muktijoddha Dal, Sramik Dal, Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha, Krishak Dal, Swechchasebak Dal, Tanti Dal, Olama Dal amd Matsyajibi Dal.
