Nine students of the Khulna Medical College Hospital were injured in a clash between the Bangladesh Chhattra League and Islami Chhattra Shibir Friday night over establishment of supremacy at the college hostel.
The college authorities, meanwhile, declared suspension of all the classes for an indefinite period and asked the students to vacate their dormitories by 8:00 am on Saturday.
The injured students who were admitted to KMCH after the clash include Abdullahel Kafi, Rafiqul Islam and Masud Rana of ICS and Chayan Biswas of the BCL while five others were given first aid, said KMCH sources.
KMCH students said some days ago the ICS activists had torn up the photos and posters of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from the walls of the halls.
On Friday at around 9:30 pm, just after a showdown by the ICS activists, about 30 BCL activists armed with sticks and iron rods rushed to the four-storey male student dormitory and ransacked the rooms of the ICS activists, said witnesses, adding that most of the students were out of the rooms at the time of ransacking.
They said that at least nine students were injured as both the sides were locked in a clash following ransacking of the Shibir rooms by the BCL activists.
The college ICS president, Syed Mohiuddin Nasir, blamed the BCL activists for attacking them and ransacking their rooms, and said the BCL activists had attacked their activists when they were studying at their dormitories at night.
The College BCL president, Aminul Islam blamed the ICS activists for attacking them. He said the Shibir activists had attacked them first and the clash had taken place when the BCL activists resisted their attack.
The superintendent of KMCH residential hostels, Abu Bakar, talking to New Age, said the clash between the BCL and ICS activists had occurred at a student dormitory at night over establishing supremacy and four injured students were admitted to the KMCH after the clash.
Thirteen rooms of the dormitory were ransacked and the college authorities declared suspension of all the classes and asked the students to vacate all the three halls for an indefinite period following the clashes, he said, adding that the orientation classes for the first year MBBS students were also cancelled.
The Sonadanga police said upon receiving information from the college authorities they reached the spot and brought the situation under control. A contingent of police was deployed in the area to avoid any more untoward incidents.
