The Awami League president, Sheikh Hasina, on Sunday called on the people to cast their vote for the Awami League-led alliance candidates in the ninth parliamentary polls to ensure their rights for food and franchise, food security, reduction in essential goods prices and happy and prosperous life for them.
‘The national elections of December 29 are very significant and also a test for the nation and all will need to work together in their areas so that the Awami League-led alliance could achieve another success in the month of victory,’ she said.
Hasina was addressing a discussion marking Martyred Intellectuals’ Day in front of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi. Before the programme, Hasina floral tribute to the martyrs by placing flowers at the Martyred Intellectuals’ Memorial at Mirpur and at the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the museum premises.
Hasina could not visit the memorial in the morning in accordance with the schedule because of her illness.
Hasina said they would need to take vow so that the forces defeated in the war of independence could no get any chance to go to power, the national flag could not be carried in the cars of war criminals and the people could no longer be subjected to exploitation, repression and torture.
Hasina was accompanied by 13 candidates of the alliance led by her party who are
contesting the national polls for the constituencies in the capital.
They are Rashed Khan Menon for Dhaka 8, Saber Hossain Chowdhury for Dhaka 9, Sahara Khatun for Dhaka 18, Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin for Dhaka 7, AKM Rahamatullah for Dhaka 10, Jahangir Kabir Nanak for Dhaka 13, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for Dhaka 11, Fazley-noor Taposh for Dhaka 12, Kamal Ahmed Majumder for Dhaka 15, Sanjida Khanam for Dhaka 4, Iliyas Uddin Mollah for Dhaka 16, Aslamul Huque Aslam for Dhaka 14 and Mizanur Rahman Khan Dipu for Dhaka 6.
Hasina said, ‘The Awami League’s election symbol boat is the symbol of people as it ensured independence of the nation in 1971 and the country attained food autarky after the victory of the symbol in the 1996 elections.’
Hasina, also a former prime minister, pledged a golden Bangla to the nation as dreamt of by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder president of Bangladesh, by building a developed and prosperous Bangladesh, if the party is voted to power.
Party leaders Syed Ashraful Islam and Abdul Latif Siddiqui and the candidates for the 13 constituencies in the capital also spoke.
