Some 45 female candidates, who are contesting for female reserved vice chairman post in upazila elections in 12 upazilas, have been carrying out hectic campaigns to get voters’ support in the polls to be held on January 22. The 12 upazilas are Sadar, Jointapur, south Surma, Fenchuganj, Companyganj, Goainghat, Bishwanath, Balaganj, Golapganj, Bianibazar, Kanaighat and Jokiganj.
However, no female candidate is contesting for chairman post in those upazilas. Joymoti Rani was elected unopposed vice chairman of Jointapur upazila as there was no other female candidate for the post. After receiving their election symbols, the female candidates along with their supporters and relatives are carrying hectic campaigns from morning to midnight.
Local sources said the campaigns launched by the female candidates got a different dimension in the upazilas as the female voters are giving importance them. Sources said only 11 female vice chairmen from among 45 contesting candidates will be elected in the upcoming upazila election.
