The national committee to protect oil, gas, mineral resources, power and ports will hold a long march from Dhaka to Phulbari-Barapukuria in Dinajpur in October 24–30 to push for its seven-point demands.
The demands include enactment of a law banning export of mineral resources, cancelling the model PSC 2008, banning coal extraction in open-pit method and strengthening Pertobangla and Bapex.
The march will begin in Dhaka on October 14 and ends in Barapukuria on October 30, the committee’s member secretary Anu Muhammad announced at a briefing at the Communist Party of Bangladesh office on Saturday. The national committee will hold conduct a mass contact programme for three months to drum up support for the long march.
The programmes include holding rallies, seminars and mass contacts in districts between July 23 and September 4, holding a national seminar in Dhaka on August 3, observing Phulbari Day on August 26, holding rallies across the country and processions on August 30, demanding implementation of the Phulbari deal and holding exchanges of views with professional groups in Dhaka between September 20 and October 2.
The committee convener, Sheikh Muhammad Shaheedullah, said the Awmi League-led government had failed to take any positive steps for the development of the power sector.
The government did not take steps to strengthening Petrobangla and Bapex to establish people’s ownership of national wealth and it is taking anti-people steps in the power sector giving privileges to international oil companies, he said.
Committee leaders, academic Akmol Hossain, politicians Tipu Biswas, Abdus Salam, Saiful Huq, Ruhin Hossain Prince and Ragib Hasan Munna and others attended the briefing.
