About 1000 prisoners are being set free on Thursday in what jail authorities say is the largest mass release in the history of the country.
The inmates, who have already served 20 years imprisonment, are being released from 61 jails across the country under title 569 of the prison code, which grants amnesty to prisoners who are elderly or have showed good conduct, said Brigadier General Mohammad Ashraful Islam Khan, inspector general (IG Prisons).
“Some of the prisoners are crying after hearing this and some others were jubilant,” Ashraf said.
“The atmosphere inside the jail is festive for the occasion. Even the jail officials have joined with them.”
Seventy-five of them were being released from the Dhaka Central Jail starting at 11:00am.
The IG prisons said the jail authorities first had to check their identities.
