2 dyeing units fined Tk 62 lakh
The Department of Environment yesterday fined two industrial units in Savar and Tejgaon around Tk 63 lakh for violating environment law.
The dyeing and finishing unit of Biswas Garments at Rajphulbaria was fined Tk 60.5 lakh for having no environment clearance certificate and polluting the Bangshai River in Savar while Win Thread Co at Tejgaon industrial area Tk 2.22 lakh for draining liquid waste into the Begunbari canal.
The enforcement and monitoring unit of DoE conducted a raid in the Biswas Garments unit Wednesday and asked its owner to appear and place business information at DoE office Thursday.
Accordingly, the owner and managing director of Biswas Garments yesterday appeared at DoE and gave a written undertaking that an effluent treatment plant (ETP) would be set up at the dyeing unit within six months.
He also committed that they would comply with all environment laws while operating their factories.
In a press statement Wednesday, the DoE enforcement and monitoring unit said Biswas Garments has been discharging 20 metric tonnes of untreated liquid waste into the Bangshai River every day ruining the aquatic habitat.
The export-oriented dyeing unit has been operating without informing any government agency concerned since its inception in 2005.
The DoE had at least twice asked Biswas Garments authorities to set up an ETP and get environment clearance certificate since 2006 but the management of the garments unit allegedly did not reply to any of the notices.
Meanwhile, a mobile court yesterday realised Tk 2.22 lakh in fine from Win Thread Co and also asked the factory authorities to immediately set up an ETP.
