Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts has recommended nationalising all primary (registered) and community schools across the country.
The recommendation was made at a meeting of the committee held at Sangsad Bhaban with its chief Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir in the chair.
Briefing reporters, the Committee Chairman said there are 19,700 primary schools, cent per cent of their expenditures, including construction of school buildings are maintained by the government. “So, it cannot not be a difficult task to nationalise those schools,” he observed.
Dr Khan argued that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had turned all primary schools into public. Besides, he said the Constitution also provides rules to ensure standard of all primary education equal.
The Committee Chairman said the meeting discussed the reasons behind closure of concrete cement factory of the railway department and asked the authorities to submit report before the committee by 30 days.
Committee members-Prof Md Ali Ashraf, Vice Principal Abdus Shahid, Dr TIM Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury, MK Anwar, Mohammad Imajuddin, Md Sayedul Haque, AKM Rahmatullah, Dhirendra Chandra Debonath, Khan Tipu Sultan, Maj Gen (Retd) Abdus Salam and Narayan Chandra Chanda attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Communications at a meeting yesterday recommended increasing duration of punishment of drivers those were found responsible for the road accidents.
The Committee suggested taking an under-signed stamp of Tk 150 with empowering the authorities to cancel the license and provide punishment to drivers who occur accident illegally before issuing a driving license.
The committee members expressed their concern over increasing the number of road accidents recently and expressed their resentment for non inclusion of any of the committee members in the national road security committee.
Committee Chairman Sheikh Mujibur Rahman presided over the meeting.
