The High Court (HC) yesterday forbidden holding of all types of political and cultural programme at the main altar of the Central Shaheed Minar.
The court also directed the government to give national awards to both dead (posthumous) and alive language heroes, and provide financial assistance to the needy heroes in recognition of their contribution in the 1952 language movement.
Wreaths can be placed at the altar of the Shaheed Minar, the monument of the historic language movement, concerned lawyers clarifying the judgment said.
A bench of the High Court Justices Mohammad Momtazuddin Ahmed and Naima Haider passed the judgment and gave eight-point directive upon the government.
The verdict followed a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB).
Advocate Manzill Murshid appeared for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Mostafa Zaman Islam stood for the government.
The HC directives also include allowing programme outside the Shaheed Minar premises; forming a committee for preparing a list of language heroes and publishing the list in a gazette by January 31, 2012; building of Shaheed Minar at all educational institutions in the country and a museum along with a library besides the Shaheed Minar.
