The Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, Naim Ahmed, on Saturday said more teenagers were involved in criminal activities in Dhaka these days and urged the guardians to keep their children from being derailed.
The city police chief said the police had so far listed more than 500 teenagers involved in crimes in various parts of the city and promised steps to contain juvenile delinquencies.
Naim was briefing newsmen on the arrest of eight suspected of mugging Tk 1 lakh from a Grameenphone distributor sales executive at Badda on January 11.
During the briefing in the Detective Branch office on Minto Road, Naim said two teenagers, Arif Hossain and Imran Hossain Bijoy, were among the eight so far held by the Detective Branch in the case.
The arrested used firearms in the incident, he said quoting the persons taken into custody.
The sales executive, Mostafa Kamal, was shot at and robbed of Tk 95,000 in cash and mobile recharge cards, and a mobile when he was collecting money from shops at Hossain Market at Badda. A hotel boy also sustained bullet injury in the incident.
The Detective Branch, assigned to investigate the case, arrested a suspect, Al Amin, in possession of the looted mobile at his house at Dakkhin Badda early Friday.
Based on his statement, the police arrested Rony and Imran Hossain at Mainartek the same day.
The police later also arrested Russell at Baratek of Madhya Badda, Masum at Barabagh and Arif Hossain in possession of a pistol at Sekandarbagh.
The police also arrested Sabuj and Imran Hossain Bijoy at Post Office Lane of Madhya Badda Friday night and seized a 0.25 calibre pistol with five bullets.
The police said Al Amin and Rony had come to know each other in jail before they were released about a year ago and became involved in crimes. They, however, used to keep firearms and ammunition with the teenagers in exchange for money and took them whenever they needed, the police said.
All the eight arrested were produced in the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court on Saturday and were remanded in custody for interrogation for five days.
