Assault by senior official alleged

Several hundred prison guards staged angry protests both in and outside Rajshahi Central Jail last evening after a prison guard was allegedly assaulted by a senior prison official.
The demonstrators were demanding immediate removal of senior jail superintendent Harun-ur Rashid till filing of this report around 9:30pm.
The demonstrating prison guards alleged, Mustafizur Rahman, a prison guard was assaulted in the afternoon when prisoners were attending an event inside the prison. Harun beat up Rahman after accusing him of not being able to control the prisoners.
Rahman was beaten mercilessly until he fell to the ground and his clothes were torn, his colleagues who rescued him, alleged.
Around 6:00pm when all prisoners were taken to their cells from the event, the prison guards staged the protest demanding punishment for the jail super.
Assaults on prison guards are nothing new there, Harun beats prison guards frequently over various issues, the demonstrators alleged. He also forces female prison guards into ‘unethical activities’, they added.
Harun-ur Rashid however could not be contacted.
Hafizur Rahman Mollah, deputy inspector general of prisons in Rajshahi Division said, “The situation is under control. We will listen to the grievances of the prison guards and take proper action according to the rules.”
