A housewife was strangled allegedly by her husband over dowry at Rasulpur of Kamrangirchar in Dhaka early Saturday.
The deceased was Brishti alias Laila, wife of Delwar Hossain. She was found dead in her room of a ground-floor flat in a three-storey building about 11:00 am.
The body was sent to the Mitford Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Soon after the incident, the police arrested her husband, suspected of being involved in the killing.
The police said Brishti’s mother Hazera Begum said Delwar, who married her daughter three years ago, had killed Brishti for a sum of Tk 3 lakh with which he planned to start a business.
The police and the family of the deceased suspected that she had been strangled as they found a pillow lying next to her. She had marks of injury in the abdomen, neck and knees.
Hazera filed a murder case accusing Delwar of killing her daughter.
Hazera alleged they had provided Tk 2 lakh in dowry in three years as demanded by Delwar but Delwar was demanding additional Tk 3 lakh. She also said Delwar had often tortured her daughter.
Assistant subinspector Altaf Hossain said they suspected a dispute over financial crisis could be a reason for the killing.
