Two families perish days before Eid
At least 10 people, including seven of two families, were killed in two road crashes in Sylhet and Sirajganj yesterday.
The deceased family members are UK expatriate Mainul Islam Chowdhury, 35, his mother Kochoi Bibi, 60, Mainul’s cousins Shahangir Chowdhury, 28 and Mubashswir Chowdhury, 25, of Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj.
Mubashswir succumbed to his injuries in Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the others died on the spot.
The accident took place at Brahmangram of Balaganj upazila when the family was riding a car on their way home from Sylhet, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
While overtaking a covered van, the car collided head on with a speeding bus coming from Habiganj towards Sylhet. The covered van also rammed into the car, said locals.
Fire service men from Tajpur recovered bodies from inside the rammed vehicle after two and a half hour’s effort at 3:30pm.
Overtaking by the speedy car caused the accident, said Officer-in-Chare of Highway Police Shahinur Rahman, adding that all the three vehicles have been seized.
Our Sirajganj correspondent reports, six persons died when a truck rammed into a private car on the west side link road of Jamuna Bridge in Kamarkhand upazila yesterday.
Four of the victims were identified as Abdus Salam Talukdar, 42, his wife Farhana, 35, son Adnan, 15, and the car driver, Babu, 25. Among the deceased five died on the spot while Adnan succumbed to his injuries at Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College and Hospital in Sirajganj.
The accident occurred around 11:30am in Dhawal area when the Bogra-bound truck from Dhaka ploughed through the Dhaka-bound car from the northern district, Hatikumrul Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Dino Bandhu Das said.
Police seized the truck while its driver managed to flee the scene.
