A four-member Bangla-desh golf team will leave Dhaka today to participate in the upcoming Asian Amateur Golf Championship 2010, which will be held in the west course of Kasumigaseki Country Club in Tokyo.
Kasumigaseki Country Club was the venue for the Japan Open in 1933, 1956, 1995 and 2006 and the Japan Women’s Open in 1999 and has a longstanding commitment to amateur golf.
The four members of the Bangladesh Golf team are Shakhawat Hossain Sohel, Dulal Hossain, Zakiruzzaman and Col (retd) SM Shawkat Ali (team manager). All three players were parts of the Bangladesh squad that won gold medal in the 11th SA Games in February.
Ace golfer Shakhawat Hossain Sohel finished 31st among 150 participants in the last edition of the Asian Amateur Golf Championship at China. ‘I believe I have improved and this time I want to see myself among the top ten, I will be concentrating upon the title from the beginning and top ten place is my realistic goal’ said Sohel.
The tournament is seen as a warm-up for the Asian Games, to be held in Guangzhou, China, from November 12-27.
Though the Golf Association of Japan will bear the expenses of the players, Difoin Group, a local corporate house, will sponsor the team manager, said the Bangladesh Golf Federation at a press conference on Saturday.
BGF general secretary Brig Gen (retd) Mirza Baker Sarwar, team manager Col (retd) SM Shawkat Ali and the chief executive officer of Kurmitola Golf Club Maj (retd) Anisul Islam spoke, among others, at the press conference.
