Most males in Rupganj and Kayetpara unions in Narayanganj fled homes last night for fear of arrest with links to Saturday’s violence.
Police filed a case against over 3,000 unidentified villagers following the clash between locals and law enforcers over “forced purchase of land” for an army housing project in the area.
Some villagers, who were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital with bullet wounds, left the hospital in a hurry to elude arrest.
A number of villagers said last night that police charged baton and chased them when they went to the residence of Mostafa Jamal to see his body at Harina Par.
Mostafa, who was hit by a bullet during the clash, succumbed to his wounds at a city hospital in the morning.
“Police gave us little time to bury Mostafa’s body. Even his relatives, some family members and neighbours could not take a glance at the body,” said Mostafa’s cousin Hasan Mahmud.
Forkan Shikder, officer-in-charge of Rupganj Police Station, denied the allegation of charging baton on villagers during the burial.
Forkan said they had not arrested any villager with links to Saturday’s incident.
