The agriculture minister, Matia Chowdhury, on Saturday underscored the need for restoring healthy atmosphere in student politics in the interests of the people.
Recalling glorious role of student politics during the 1960’s, Matia said the current students politics had failed to fulfil the expectations of the people.
The minister was addressing a discussion marking the 40th anniversary of the 1969 mass uprising, organised by the daily Shamokal at its office in Dhaka.
Workers’ Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon, Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim, Unity for Political Reforms coordinator ASM Abdur Rob, Shamokal acting editor Muzzammil Husain, former president of Bangladesh Chhatra League Abdur Rauf, former president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union Mahbubullah, BCL president Mahmud Hasan Ripon and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal president Azizul Bari Helal, among others, addressed the function.
Awami League presidium member Tofail Ahmed conducted the discussion.
Matia said the nation was on its march towards democracy and had hoped the journey would be smooth in the days to come.
Tofail said January 24, 1969 was a significant day in the history of Bangladesh and it had played a very important role in the war of liberation in 1971.
He urged the students to learn from the sprit of the 1969 uprising to help maintain congenial environment in the educational institutions despite differences of opinions.
Menon said the mass uprising had created a foundation for the election of 1970 and the independence war in 1971.
He said the historic 11-point of Kendrio Chhatra Parishad had brought the people of all strata in a common platform against the Pakistani rule.
Selim urged the students to take lesson from the mass uprising to move towards the right direction.
Rauf urged all to work together to implement the sprit of 11-point demand.
Ripon called upon the national leaders to come forward to reactive student unions in all educational institutions of the country for bringing a qualitative change in student polities.
The speakers paid rich tributes to those who had laid down their lives in the mass uprising and in the war of independence.
The speakers also recalled the courageous role of the students in the 1960’s and said that period was very significant in the history of Bangladesh.
