15 killed in mob beating in Gazipur in 3 months and a half
Two people suspected of being involved in robbery and stealing were beaten to death and another was wounded in the beating after they had been captured by mobs in Gazipur and Manikganj early Thursday.
With the two, nine were killed in four such incidents across the country in six days.
A mob at Meghdubi in the Gazipur district headquarters beat to death Waliullah, 25, suspected of being involved in robbery, early in the day. The deceased was a resident of Kaliganj in the district, the New Age correspondent in Gazipur said.
Anil Chandra Das, 27, a resident of Betarhati Nilgoaj in Kishoreganj, was also injured in the incident. He was sent to Gazipur General Hospital.
Assistant subinspector of Pubail police outpost Abdul Karim said a gang of five to six robbers entered the house of Afzal Hossain about 3:00am.
As the family cried out for help, neighbours reached the place and captured the gangsters. Waliullah died on the spot as the mob beat the gangsters, the police said.
Local people and the police said 14 robbery suspects had earlier been beaten to death by mobs in four incidents in the district in three months and a half.
Six were killed and six were injured in an incident at Pashchim Enayetpur in the district headquarters on July 18.
Two suspects were killed at Salna Desipara early August 3. Six were killed at Chatir Bazar at Sripur on August 11.
The superintendent of police in Gazipur, SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman, said incidents such as mob beating had increased in view of an increase in robbery incidents in the area.
A man suspected of being involved in stealing was beaten to death at Kusta of Ghior in Manikganj, the correspondent in Manikganj said. The deceased was Mosharaf Hossain, 32, a resident of Hatipara in the district headquarters, the police said.
The police said the local people had captured him at the house of Abdul Baten at Kusta about 2:30am and had beaten him to death.
The owner of the house filed a case with the Shibalaya police and the Ghior police filed another case in connection with the incident.
Five people were earlier beaten to death at Matuail in the capital and two were killed in mob beating at Purba Rajasan on the city outskirts at Savar.
