Another fighting for life
A female student died while her hostel roommate was fighting for life at a city hospital after they took poison at Malibagh in the capital early Friday.
The deceased was Tarana Shirin alias Jeny, 18, a resident of Chatkhil in Noakhali. Tarana was an intermediate student of Siddheshwari Degree College.
Another girl Tania Sultana Tanisha, 18, a student of Mirza Abbas Mohila College, was fighting for life at Al Shafena Hospital at Malibagh, the police said.
The police, quoting the hostel manager, Saleha Begum, said Tarana and Tania had lived in a room on the first floor of a six-storey hostel named Keya-Priya at Pashchim Malibagh for six months.
Saleha said she had gone to the room after hearing the groaning of two students around 2:30am.
Both were found unconscious and Tarana was pronounced dead while she was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 3:00am, Saleha said.
Tania was unconscious till about 6:00pm, the police said.
Saleha was arrested as she had come up with different statements during interrogation, the police said, adding they had also detained Abdur Razzak, husband of Saleha Begum, for interrogation.
Local people alleged that Razzak and Saleha had been conducting unsocial activities in the name of running a hostel for long.
Subinspector Jafar Ali of the Ramna police said Razzak was running the hostel by renting the building from local councillor Mohammad Arif.
The police official said Tania had admitted they had bought three bottles of poison from a shop at Khilgaon.
‘We had seized three bottles of poison from the room. Tarana got married a year back and she had been suffering from mental illness,’ SI Jafar said, quoting AKM Shamsuddin, uncle of Tarana.
He said that they were investigating the incident.
A case was filed.
