At least 15 people were killed and 15 injured in road accidents in eight districts on Sunday and Saturday night.
The accidents took place in Dhaka Gazipur, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Munshiganj, Rajbari, Brammanbaria and Bogra.
Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation employee Abul Kashem, 52, of Sirajgaj, was run over by a bus Balaka Paribahan on the Dhaka–Gazipur Highway near Jasimuddin Road at Uttara in the capital early Sunday, hospital sources said.
The police sent the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The New Age correspondent in Gazipur said five people were killed and 10 injured in a head-on collision between a pickup van and a human hauler on the Dhaka–Tangail Highway at Kodda in the upazila headquarters on Sunday.
The deceased were Ruhul Amin, 35, a resident of Konabari in Gazipur, his wife Manjuna, 26, Shamim, 22, Rafiq, 22, and Raju, 28, of Lalmonirhat.
The human hauler headed for the Joydevpur crossing from Chandra collided with the pickup van about 6:00am. Manjuna died on the spot. Fourteen were injured, witnesses said.
The injured were sent to Gazipur General Hospital where Shamim, Rafiq, Ruhul Amin and Raju died.
The injured Oli, 8, and Tanbir, 6, sons of Ruhul Amin, were moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
The police sent the bodies for post-mortem examinations. The vehicles were seized.
In Bogra, two people were killed and four injured when a bus headed for Rangpur from Dhaka with six passengers on board fell into the River Karatoya breaking through the railings of a bridge at Mahasthangarh of Shibganj about 11:00pm on Saturday, the Shibganj police officer-in-charge, Abu Mokaddem Ali said.
The deceased were pharmaceutical company executive Nazrul Islam, 45, and bus supervisor Abul Kashem, 37.
Fire fighters recovered the bodies and sent them to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
In another accident at Sariakandi in Bogra, Rafiqul Islam, 45, died in hospital about six hours after a motorised vehicle carrying him had overturned about 3:00pm on Saturday.
In Chittagong, pickup van driver Zoynul Abedin, 30, was killed in a head-on collision between a truck and the van at Fatehabad of Hathazari on Saturday morning.
Local people sent him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The truck driver got away, leaving the truck behind.
The correspondent in Rajshahi said private university student Imtiaz Ahmed, 22, of Paba, was killed as an auto-rickshaw hit him in the Sonadighi crossing.
The critically injured Imtiaz was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he died at 12:15 on Sunday.
In Mushiganj, eight-year-old Jahirul Islam was run over by a bus headed for Dhaka on the Dhaka–Mawa Road at Sholaghar Bhuichittra at Srinagar when he was crossing the road.
In Rajbari, 70-year-old Hossain Ali was run over by a motorbike at Petra Bazar of Pangsha on Sunday morning.
The critically injured Hossain was sent to a local hospital where he died at noon, the police said.
In Brammanbaria, motorcyclist Ranu Miah was killed and his co-rider Bulbul Ahmed injured as their motorcycle skidded off into a ditch at Masinagar on the Nabinagar– Bancharam-pur Road on Saturday night.
