Western Marine Shipyard of Chittagong will deliver two vessels, the largest-ever built in Bangladesh, to a German shipping company today.
Each of the vessels, christened Grona Ammersum and Grona Biessum, is 100 metre long and has a 5,200 deadweight tonnage carrying capacity, Western Marine Shipyard chairman Saiful Islam told a news conference at Hotel Agrabad in the port city on Thursday.
He said the vessels were built in compliance with the latest International Maritime Organisation guidelines under the supervision of Germanischer Lloyd.
They have been certified as E3 Ice-class vessels that can survive cryogenic weather condition, he added.
‘The ships made a successful sea trial on November 15 and the buyer is totally satisfied with their performance in the sea,’ Saiful said.
The daily Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman, The Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam, Western Marine Shipyard managing director Sakhawat Hossain and quality management director Jalal Khaled, and Markku Vedder, representative of Grona Shipping, the German buying company, were present at the conference.
