Bangladesh men’s cricket team stand on the brink of bringing the country’s first-ever Asian Games gold home when they take on surprise package Afghanistan in the final in Guangzhou today.
Mohammad Ashraful’s boys confirmed the title clash with a five-wicket defeat of a strong Sri Lankan team in the second semifinal of the 16th Asian Games yesterday.
War-ravaged Afghanistan got through with a shock 22-run win over Pakistan.
This is the first Asian Games that have included cricket in its list of events. Bangladesh also won the gold in the inaugural cricket tournament at the South Asian Games held in Dhaka earlier this year.
Bangladesh have never won a gold medal in the continental extravaganza which is second only to the Olympic Games.
