Two people were killed and five injured as robbers opened fire on the villagers in Derai upazila of Sunamganj Sunday night.
The deceased were Dipon Bala Das, 16, daughter of Sudhir Ranjan Das and Anup Das, 26, son of Baroda Das of Sutargaon village of the upazila.
The robbers also looted valuables, including 10 tolas of gold ornaments, Tk 2 lakh in cash from the house of Goutam Das, a village physician.
A gang of 15 robbers stormed into the house of Goutam at about 7:00pm and took the members of the house hostage at gunpoint, said locals.
Hearing screams of Gautam’s family members, neighbours rushed to the spot and besieged the house.
In the face of resistance, the gang opened fire while fleeing the scene, killing Dipon Bala on the spot and injuring six others.
Anup Das died on the way to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital (SMOMCH).
Among the injured, Sudhir Das, Shipon Rani Das and Nitesh Das were admitted to SMOMCH while Jhunu Bala Das and Shilpi Rani Das received treatment at the upazila health complex.
Villagers, however, caught a female member of the gang, Aklima, while the others managed to escape.
A case was filed with Derai police station.
