Over two dozen coins, found about 11 months ago at Kashbawri village of Joypurhat district, have been identified as of Akbar era.
Dilip Kantu Mahata, of the village under Panchbibi upazila, found 28 coins at the construction site of Nilkanto Mondir on January 25 last year, said Panchbibi police sources.
He along with locals handed over the coins to Mir Shaid Mondal, 75, of the neighbourhood. Shaid Mondal then handed those over to the local police.
AKM Yaqub Ali, emeritus professor of Department of Islamic History and Culture, University of Rajshahi, confirmed that the coins were made at the rule of Emperor Akbar.
The coins are now with Panchbibi Police Station.
Biman Chandra Karmakar, officer-in-charge of the police station, said police will soon apply for permission to the court concerned in Joypurhat to hand over the coins to Mahasthan Archaeological Museum in Bogra.
The coins weigh around 303gm and the metal of the coins seems to be silver, police said.
Inscriptions on both sides of the irregular shaped coins are still very clear.
Prof Yaqub Ali told that the coins were made between 1584 and 1605 and known as Ilahi Coin. Nastaliq style alphabets were inscribed on both sides of the coins.
Some of the coins have Allahhu Akbar along with other Arabic alphabets inscribed on them, he said.
