Agitated people set bus on fire
At least 14 people were killed and 50 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka city, Dhamrai, Keraniganj, Chittagong, Gaibandha and Jhenaidah yesterday.
Our staff correspondent reports: 10 people were killed in separate road accidents in the city, Dhamrai and South Keraniganj yesterday.
Of them, three people were killed in three separate accidents in Dhaka city yesterday.
A banana vendor died on the spot when a Gulistan-bound bus ran him over at 7:00am while he was crossing road near Farmgate area.
The unidentified deceased was aged about 40 years.
Ashrafuddin, 50, a pedestrian died when a bus ran over him at East Shewrapara bus stand at 8:00am.
In another accident an unidentified man aged about 40 years died when a bus ran over him near Chandrima Uddyan in the city at about 8.30am.
Our Munshiganj correspondent adds: Two passengers of a three-wheeler, Akbar, 30, and Mohon, 25, died on the spot while two others unidentified died later at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Sir Salimullah Medical College following a head-on collision between a Dhaka-bound bus and a CNG-run auto rickshaw coming from opposite direction at Abdullahpur in South Keraniganj at about 12.45 pm.
Agitated people set the bus on fire. Hundreds of vehicles made long queues on both sides on the highway due to the blockade for about two and a half hours.
The driver of the bus however escaped the scene.
Locals withdrew the barricade at about 3:00pm.
A report from Dhamrai says : Three people were killed and 45 others injured as a passenger bus hit a roadside tree on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Dhamrai early Saturday.
The deceased are Mohammad Jalal, 20, of Diarpara of Bagerhat district, Milon Molla, 25, of Kashiani of Gopalganj and Gazi Milon, 26, reports our Manikganj correspondent.
Md Helal Uddin, sub-inspector of Dhamrai Police Station, said a Dhaka-bound bus of Diganta Paribahan dashed a wayside tree at Joypura in Dhamrai at about 5:00am after its driver lost control over the steering.
Jalal and Milon Molla died on the spot while Gazi Milon succumbed to his injuries at Islampur Health Complex.
Injured passengers were admitted to different local hospitals.
A correspondent from Ctg reports : A woman and her son were killed and two others of the same family seriously injured in a road accident in the port city yesterday.
The deceased are Nujahan Begum, 60 and her son Md Belal, 40 resident of Paine Danda at Fatikchhari thana. The wounded are Nurjahan’s seven-year-old grandchild Tanvir and her granddaughter Jharna, 9.
Kamrul Islam, sub inspector of Bayezid Police Station, said the accident took place at about 7:00am when an unidentified vehicle hit the three-wheeler from one side.
Following the accident fire brigade team and locals rushed to the spot and rescued the children and admitted them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Our correspondent from Gaibandha adds: A motorcyclist was killed and three others pedestrians injured when a speedy truck hit them at Piyerpur on Gobindagnaj Upazila yesterday 4:30pm.
The deceased is Abu Sayeed of village Shibganj.
Police said the motorcycle rider skidded off road by the hit of the truck and died on the spot. The truck knocked more three pedestrians nearby while it was fleeing.
The injured persons were rushed to Gobindagnaj Health Complex.
Police could not identify the killer truck immediately.
A case was filed with Gobindagnaj police station.
Our correspondent from Jhenidah adds : A youth was killed in a road crash at Bhatoi Bazar under Shailkupa upazila yesterday.
The deceased is Anis Sardar, 28, son of Biru Sardar of Bhagabannagar village under the same upazila.
Police said the accident took place around 4:30am when the truck started its journey and Anis fell down from the truck while he was going to Dhaka on a betel leaf laden truck, leaving him dead on the spot.
Police seized the truck but the driver and helper managed to flee.
