Three siblings sustained serious burn injuries when miscreants threw acid at them at Hajaribagh in the Old Town of Dhaka on Wednesday night.
The injured were identified as Parvin Begum, 40, wife of Mohammad Jahangir, her younger sister Parul Akhter Keya, 22, and younger brother Mohammad Selim, 25. They are residents of 5/1, Malitola Lane, Bangshal in the old Dhaka.
Among the injured, the two sisters were admitted to the plastic surgery and burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Selim took first aid in the hospital on Wednesday night as he sustained minor injuries.
Doctors stated the condition of Parvin and Keya to be critical as Parvin sustained terrible burn injuries in her face and both eyes while Keya had her one eye and face burnt.
Police quoting the victims told New Age that three young men hurled acid at them when they were returning home in a rickshaw after performing in a function at a fair at Nawabganj in the Hazaribagh area at about 10:30pm.
Victim Keya told New Age at the DMCH that some youths in the audience had hurled abuses at them while they were performing in the programme and they had protested at their behaviour.
She said she suspected those young men might have thrown acid on them.
Keya, however, said that she had filed a case accusing some unnamed persons of the acid attack.
When asked why she did not name any person in the in the case, Keya said she was not sure if the youths who had misbehaved with them had been involved in the attack.
Sub-inspector Bijoy Das of Hajaribagh police station said that nobody was arrested in this connection till 6:00pm.
Hazaribagh police officer-in-charge Enamul Haque said that they had visited the two sisters at DMCH.
