At least three killed and 30 injured when a bus fell into a roadside ditch at Pallabi in Dhaka on Friday morning.
The deceased were Mahbubur Rahman Sumon, 22, and Mahfuzul Haque Rinku, 30, residents of Sen Para Parbata at Mirpur, and the bus driver’s assistant Al-Amin, a resident of Gazipur.
The police said a bus with 40 passengers on board plunged into the ditch near Rustampur about 9:30am when it was overtaking another bus. Mahfuzul died on the spot. Thirty-five were injured.
Sumon died on his way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Al-Amin died in Orthopaedics Hospital in the capital.
The injured Sagar Ahmed, Khurshed Alam, Hiru Sikder, Harun Mian, Ihrahim Ahmed and Mohammad Hossain were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Others injured were admitted to clinics.
Local residents of Mirpur 13 hired the bus to go to the Ansars Camp at Shafipur in Gazipur for picnic.
The Pallabi police officer-in-charge, Iqbal Hossain, said they were conducting rescue operation with the help of local people and pulled out all the injured passengers from inside the bus.
In another incident, an unnamed woman, aged about 45, died on the spot after she had been run over by a bus about 3:30pm near the Mouchak crossing in the city on Friday afternoon.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
A case was filed.
