AL candidates lead 2nd spell

Candidates backed by the ruling Awami League dominated municipal polls in Barisal and Khulna divisions winning 24 out of 49 municipalities in the second spell of the local government polls on Thursday.
Unofficial results showed that the AL-backed mayoral candidates won 15 out of 19 municipalities in Barisal and nine out of 30 municipalities in Khulna division. BNP’s mayoral candidates took 11 out of 30 municipalities in Khulna division and only one in Barisal division. Five rebel candidates from BNP and five from Awami League secured mayoral posts in 10 municipalities in the two divisions. Three independent candidates also won mayoral polls.
The staggered local elections in 243 out of 310 municipalities across the country started on Wednesday. The municipalities in Dhaka division are set to go to polls on January 17 and in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions on January 18.
In the first day’s polls BNP-backed candidates swept with wins in 35 out of 72 municipalities in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions held on Wednesday.
Following are the unofficial results of the municipal polls:
Kushtia: At Kumarkhali, AL-backed Shamsuzzaman Orun (5,879 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; Jamaat backed Adur Rashid Biswas (3,896) lost. At Bherama, AL-backed Shamimul Islam Sana (5,801) defeated BNP-backed Towhidul Islam Alam (4,923). At Mirpur, AL-backed Enamul Huq (7,815) defeated BNP-backed Rahmat Ali Rabban (4,130). At Khoksa, rebel BNP candidate Anwar Ahmed Khan Tatari (3,147) defeated BNP-backed Alauddin Khan (2,630).
Meherpur: At Gangni, AL-backed Ahmed Ali (4,547 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; Jamaat backed Rabiul Islam (4,197) lost.
At Meherpur, independent candidate Motasimbillah Matu (7885) defeated BNP-backed candidate Jahangir Biswas (7244).
Jessore: At Bagharpara, BNP-backed Abdul Hye Mana (1,410 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; AL-backed Quamruzzaman Bachchu (1,280) lost. At Chaugachha, BNP-backed Selim Reza Awliar (5,071) defeated AL-backed SM Saifur Rahman (4,001). At Jessore, BNP-backed mayoral candidate Maruful Islam (41,999) defeated AL-backed Quamruzzaman Chunnu (29,446).  At Nawapara, BNP’s Rabiul Hossain (19,451) defeated AL-backed Enamul Huq Babul (18,816). At Benapole, AL-backed Ashraful Alam Liton (8793) defeated BNP-backed Nazim Uddin (7,416),
At Manirampur, BNP-backed Shahid Iqbal Hossain (6676) defeated Amjad Hossain Lovlu (4,546). At Keshabpur, BNP-backed Abdus Samad Biswas (8575) defeated AL’s Milan Mitra (5352).
Jhenaidah: At Harinakundu, AL-backed Shahin Reza Rintu (5,650 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; BNP-backed Jinnatul Huq Khan (5,168) lost. At Kaliganj, AL-backed Mostafizur Rahman Bizu (7,982) defeated rebel AL candidate Masudur Rahman (6,630). At Shailkupa, AL’s rebel candidate Kazi Ashfaqul Azam (9919) defeated BNP-backed Khalilur Rahman (5363).
At Kotchandpur, BNP-backed Salauddin Bulbul (5748) defeated independent candidate Zahidul Islam Jire (5591).
At Maheshpur, rebel BNP candidate Hamidul Islam Khan Chinnu (6510) defeated AL-backed Abdur Rashid Khan (6170).
Khulna: At Paikgachha, AL-backed Selim Jahangir (6,392 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; rebel AL candidate Kamrul Hasan Tipu (2,761) lost. At Chalna, independent
candidate Achintya
Kumar Mondol (2,252) defeated rebel AL candidate Sanat kumar Biswas (2,195).
Bagarhat: At Bagerhat, AL-backed Khan Habibur Rahman (13,538 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; BNP-backed ASM Atahar Hossain Abu Mia (8,421) lost. At Mongla, BNP-backed Zulfikar Ali (7,975) defeated AL-backed Sheikh Abdus Salam (6,741). At Morrelganj, rebel AL candidate Monirul Huq Talukder (4,933) defeated BNP-backed Zulfikar Ali (2,718).
Satkhira: At Kalaroa, rebel BNP candidate Gazi Akhtarul Islam (6,333 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; Jamaat-backed Kazi Kamal Moniruzzman (2,399) lost. At Satkhira, BNP-backed MA Jalil (25,894) defeated JP-backed Sheikh Ajhar Hossain (12825).
Chuadanga: At Alamdanga, BNP’s rebel candidate Mir Mohiuddin (6595) defeated JSD candidate Sabed Ali [5363], at Darshana, BNP-backed Mahidul Islam [9028] defeated AL-backed Matiar Rahman (8846).
At Jibannagar, rebel BNP candidate Noab Ali (3998) defeated AL-backed Jahangir Alam (3972).
Narail: At Narail, BNP-backed Zulfikar Ali Mondol (8,915) defeated AL-backed Jahangir Biswas (6852), at Kalia, rebel AL candidate Imdadul Huq Tulu (5863) defeated AL-backed Ikramul Huq Tuku (4186).
Barisal: At Muladi, AL-backed Safiquzzaman Rubel (4,408 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; JP-backed Sukkur Ahmed (2,996) lost. At Banaripara, AL-backed Golam Saleh Manju Molla (1,988) defeated BNP-backed Golam Mahmud Mahbub Master (1,724). At Bakerganj, AL-backed Lokman Hossain Dakua (2,981) defeated rebel AL candidate Mahbub Alam (1,887). At Gaurnadi, AL-backed Harisur Rahman Haris (16,694) defeated BNP-backed Hawladar Nurul Islam (2,974). At Mehendiganj, AL-backed Kamaluddin Khan (8,539) defeated BNP-backed Shahabuddin Himu (2,712).
Jhalakhati: At Nalchiti, BNP-backed Majibur Rahman ( 5,219 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; revel AL Masud Khan (4,411) lost.
Bhola: At Lalmohan, AL-backed Emdadul Islam (4,299 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; BNP backed Enayet Kabir (2,361) lost. At Daulatkhan, AL-backed Ali Azam Mukul (4,260) defeated BNP-backed Maksudur Rahman (2,078), at Bhola, rebel AL candidate Maniruzzaman (9,115) defeated BNP-backed Golam Nabi Alamgir (8,370), at Borhanuddin, AL-backed Rafikul Islam (3,507) defeated independent Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury Tipu (1,057).
Patuakhali: At Kalapara, AL-backed SM Rakibul Ahsan (3,978 votes) was unofficially elected mayor defeating independent candidate Nurul Haque Munshi (2,104), at Patuakhali, AL-backed Shafiqul Islam (10858) defeated BNP- backed Bayezid Ahmed Panna (8063).
Borguna: At Barguna, AL-backed Sahadat Hossain (5,852) defeated rebel candidate from the party Md Shahjahan (4,532), at Patharghata, independent candidate Mallik Md Aiub Hossain (2,774) defeated AL-backed Anwar Hossain Akon (2,052), at Betagi, AL-backed Altaf Hossain Biswas (2,683) defeated Shahjahan Kabir (2,675), at Amtoli, rebel AL candidate Matiur Rahman (4,190) defeated AL-backed candidate Gazi Shamsul Huq (2,254).
Pirojpur: At Pirojpur, AL-backed Habibur Rahman Malek was elected earlier uncontested, at Swarupkathi, AL-backed Delwar Hossain Faruk (5,216) defeated BNP’s Shafikul Islam Farid (2,101), at Mathbaria, AL-backed Rafiuddin Ahmed Ferdous (3,604) defeated BNP’s backed KM Humayun Kabir (3,548).
