The publication of upazila election results is getting delayed due to omissions and commissions in the result sheets sent by returning officers, CEC Dr ATM Shamsul Huda said on Tuesday.
“After scrutiny, it was found that the results announced by the returning officers at night had no similarity with the ones announced later in the morning,” Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda told reporters at the EC secretariat.
Dr Huda said the Election Commission would take decisions about all these things after looking into the matters minutely. He said some upazila election results sent by some returning officers to the Commission were found incorrect in many cases. “So, the gazette publication will be delayed.”
“The returning officers sent one kind of election results at night and another type in the morning. We cannot allow such results,” the CEC said, adding that the Commission would look into the matters soon.
But Dr Huda could not exactly say in how many upazilas the results would have to be kept withheld and how many of upazilas were sent to the government press for printing.
He said the Commission would make it clear today (Wed-nesday).
Earlier in the day, the CEC sought more time to make clear its position about the upazila elections, publication of the gazette notification due to withholding of results of some upazila elections.
“I need more time to brief you about it,” Dr Huda told the reporters in the afternoon at the EC secretariat when asked to clear his position about the upazila polls.
Describing the recent newspaper reports on the gazette publication of the upazila polls as absurd ones, the CEC said the Commission was not aware of the information getting published in the newspapers. “I don’t know who said what and who wrote such absurd reports in the newspapers,” he said.
Replying to a question, an annoyed Huda suggested the inquisitive reporters to go to those people (EC officials) who had given such wrong information. “Go to those who have provided such absurd information,” he said.
He made it clear that he would not take the responsibility about what was written in the newspapers recently on the postponement of results and the gazette publications. “I’m not responsible for that.”
The CEC said he would keep performing his duties in his own style and inform the media of the matters when it would be necessary. “I’ll call you when I’ll deem it appropriate,” he said.
