More than 600 students from different schools in Dhaka took part in the annual sports, supported by the British Council Bangladesh, at Sultana Kamal stadium, Dhanmondi in the capital.
Students from fourteen different schools including Alia Madrassah, Kamrunnessa Govt Girl’s High School Dhanmondi, Motijheel Govt Boy’s High School participated in the event organised by the young sports leaders from eight different schools.
British Council, in collaboration with the ministries of education, primary and mass education, youth and sports, women and children affairs and UNICEF, were organising this four-division-based young sports leadership programme across the country since 2009.
Mahbub Ahmed, secretary to the ministry of youth and sports, said in the inauguration session that the programme would help create successful young leaders through sports.
Speaking on the occasion, British Council director Charles Nutall said, ‘We are pleased that our International Inspiration marked a significant shift in changing state policy and making physical leadership a crucial element in the development of young people and young minds.’
Project manager M Ashiqur Rahman, International Inspiration of British Council, said through the leadership training the students built up their capacity in leading as well as learning the practice of democracy.
‘They vote and choose their leader after the “Youth Sport Leadership” training finished,’ he added.
