SIRAJGANJ: A widow, who sustained acid burn injuries on early Saturday, is fighting for survival on the bed of Sirajganj Sadar Hospital in the town.
The victim’s condition is now critical, doctors said. The victim was identified as Jorina Bewa, 45, wife of late Abdus Sattar Munshi of Bhennabari village in Sirajganj Sadar Upazila.
Police and victim’s family sources said the rivals hurled acid on her face at around 3am when she came out of her bedroom to respond to the call of nature. Acid burnt her face, throat and chest, hospital sources said.
The main reason behind the acid attack was a longstanding dispute over land, the widow claimed. No case was filed till writing the report.
Although the government has banned open sale of acid in the market, the 64 district administrations are yet to take measures to enforce Prime Minister Sheikh Hasain’s strict directives to bring such sales under restriction. Moreover, the law-enforcing agencies are seen to be lax in taking strong actions against the perpetrators of acid attacks
