The government on Monday announced a half-day holiday in the capital on 17 February to facilitate the glitzy opening ceremony of the World Cup Cricket 2011.
“The public holiday has been announced under an executive order
from 2:00pm on 17 February for the Dhaka city for smooth opening of the World Cup Cricket,” an official handout said here Monday.
Earlier, the holiday was announced for the whole day.
Bangladesh, which is co-hosting the mega World Cup cricket for the first time along with two other South Asian countries, India and Sri Lanka, will also host the prestigious opening cere-mony at the Banga-bandhu National Stadium.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the 14-nation 42-day heavy weight tourney during the colourful opening ceremony that would last for 135 minutes.
Bangladesh will also host eight World Cup matches, including two quarterfinals, six in Dhaka and two in the port city of Chittagong.
