A permanent Shaheed Minar, a memorial to the historic Language Movement of 1952 was inaugurated in Rome, the Italian capital, on Friday by Foreign Minister Dipu Moni.
Bangladesh embassy in Rome constructed the monument at a local park as a symbol for the International Mother Language Day.
Major languages of the world have been engraved on the mosaic work of its columns. Well-known Italian artist, Paolo W Tamburella also assisted in its construction, official sources said.
“The monument not only reflects the history of Bangladesh but also acts as a symbol of universal peace and harmony,” said Dipu Moni.
Former Italian Ambassador to Dhaka Itala Maria Marta Occhi, vice president of Italy-Bangladesh Association for Friendship and Cooperation, Prof Francesco Zannini, Ambassador of Afghanistan and Dean of ESCAP Group of Ambassadors in Italy Mohammad Musa Maroofi and Bangladesh Ambassador in Rome Masud Bin Momen addressed the inauguration function.
Earlier, Dipu Moni had a bilateral meeting with her counterpart Franco Frattini when they discussed issues of mutual interest. She informed Fratinni about the problems faced by Bangladeshis living in Italy and sought his intervention to resolve the issues.
Later, Dipu Moni inaugurated a Room dedicated to Bangladesh in International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
