A 12-year-old girl was stabbed in the neck by a stalker yesterday at Burhanpur in Hazaribagh of the city, while she was going home from school.
The victim, Hira Akhter, was a student of class three at an NGO-run school at Ganaktuli lane.
According to witnesses, Mamun, 27, a rickshaw-puller, who was lurking near Hira’s house at about 3:00pm, swooped on her and left a long gash on the neck.
Hira was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the doctors stitched up the cut.
Daughter of a poor rickshaw-puller, Hira said Mamun used to stalk her to school often and threw vulgar remarks which embarrassed her in front of her classmates.
He also tried to make advances to Hira when her parents were away at work, she added.
Six months ago Jamal, driver of a CNG-run three-wheeler, came up with a marriage proposal on behalf of Mamun, Hira’s mother, a domestic help, told The Daily Star.
“We were shocked that Mamun, being a married man and father of a child himself could behave so outrageously,” she said.
We informed locals who beat up Mamun and drove him and Jamal away from the area,” added Hira’s mother.
However, Mamun reappeared a few days ago and threatened to pour acid on Hira if his proposal was not accepted.
Enamul Huq, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hazaribagh Police Station, said they were trying to arrest Mamun. A case would be filed against him soon under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, he added.
