A college student yesterday surrendered to police after killing his elder sister at the capital’s Sabujbagh.
Mithun Bala, an honors student of Govt Kobi Nazrul College, told the police that he killed his sister Rekha Rahman, 30, for her extramarital affairs.
Rekha’s husband Kamrul Hasan Sumon has been in Singapore for last six months. Mithun and his sister moved to a rented flat at West Mathertek of the city four months back.
Police said Mithun yesterday entered Rekha’s bedroom around 2:00am when she was asleep and hacked in the head with a local machete.
Hearing the victim’s scream, owner of the house and neighbours rushed there and found Rekha lying in a pool of blood, said Mohammad Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sabujbagh Police Station. Rekha died after a while.
Following the incident, Mithun himself asked the neighbours to inform police.
Sabujbagh police arrested him from the flat around 3:00am and sent Rekha’s body to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.
Morgue sources said three marks of hacking were seen on the victim’s head.
Mithun told the police that he planned to kill his sister three days back and bought the local machete from Khilgaon market.
Rekha got involved in several extramarital affairs after her husband flied to Singapore, said the OC quoting Mithun. Mithun could not tolerate his sister’s unethical activities but did not ask her to stop those since she was senior to him.
Rekha converted to a Muslim from Hindu around six years back and married Kamrul who was her third husband, said the arrestee in primary interrogation. Their parents are living in Moksedpur of Gopalganj.
