BNP vice-chairman MK Anwar has said if the prime minister is sincere to combat corruption, a powerful anti-corruption commission should be established to inquire into corruption since the independence of Bangladesh.
The BNP leader said this to reporters on Friday at his residence responding to prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s statement in the parliament Wednesday that a white paper should be published on corruption during the five-year BNP-Jamaat and two-year interim government rules.
Anwar hoped the present government would not take any move similar to the operation the interim government had launched against politicians in the name of anti-corruption drive.
‘We hope the anti-corruption drive will not be targeted against particular individuals or party,’ he said.
The BNP leader also disagreed with the prime minister’s contention that the BNP members of parliament have been given more front row seats than they deserve. He said Awami League members were given more seats in the front row in the last parliament.
In the present ninth parliament the opposition BNP has been given four seats in the front row after a re-adjustment by the new speaker, Abdul Hamid. The BNP lawmakers are abstaining from parliament since January 29 to press for more front-row seats in keeping with what outgoing speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar had allocated them.
