Village arbitrators shaved the head of a woman accusing her of adultery at Binahali of Adamdighi upazila here yesterday.
Garment worker Lovely Begum, 26, has been married to Abdul Kader for the last 14 years.
Lovely said they went to Dhaka five years ago looking for work. They secured jobs at a garment factory but a few months later, Kader quit his job and became solely depended on her income.
Kader used to press her for money and often subjected her to physical torture. He spent most of the money for buying drugs.
He returned to the village last month and started to spread rumours involving Lovely. When she went there to reconcile with her husband, the local arbitrators on Friday termed her a women of loose character.
Sadek Hossain Babu, in collaboration with arbitrators Ujjal, Shafiqul and her husband Kader, shaved her head with scissors and a razor, complained Lovely.
They also confined her at her father’s house for two days following the incident.
Lovely and her parents escaped on Sunday night and took refuge at their relative’s house in Dupchanchia.
The victim filed a case against five people including her husband Kader and local Awami League activist Sadek Hossain Babu, said Abdul Mottaleb, officer-in-charge of Adamdighi Police Station.
Bilquis Banu, manager of Brac’s human rights and legal aid service of Adamdighi took the victim into their custody and helped her to file the case.
