The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday said it has no objection in signing deals based on equity and expected that the Dhaka tour of Indian Congress party leader, Sonia Gandhi, would leave a positive impact on Indo-Bangla relations.
The party’s acting secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said his party wants fair bilateral relations with India based on equity.
He also iterated the party’s demand of making public all the deals signed with India after the ruling government assumed office.
‘Our chairperson has said implementation of treaties on transit and other issues will depend on public opinion. We have to see whether our interests are protected. We have to know first what benefits we would get in exchange of awarding transit,’ he said at the graveside of BNP founder late president Ziaur Rahman.
Fakhrul also laid stress on issues of water sharing of the Ganges and stopping killing of Bangladeshi citizens by Indian border guards along the frontier.
He said Indian Congress leader Sonia’s tour of Dhaka was significant in Bangladesh-India relations. ‘We expect bilateral relations would be strengthened through her tour which should leave a positive impact on settling unresolved issues between the two countries,’ he added.
Fakhrul went to Zia’s grave to accompany former minister Nur Mohammad, who had joined BNP recently, for placing wreaths and saying prayers.
