An army inquiry committee headed by Quarter Masters General Lt Gen Jahangir Alam Chowdhury will start functioning from today to investigate the BDR carnage.
Chief of General Staff of Army Lt Gen Sina Ibne Jamali said this while briefing reporters at Army Officers Banquet Hall yesterday.
He said the inquiry committee will visit the BDR headquarters and inspect the places where the massacre took place on February 25-26 and how.
The Chief of General Staff said the government took a decision in principle to change the name of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) soon after completing some legal procedures.
About the missing army officers, he said seven officers are now missing. They are: Col Gulzar Ahmed, Lt Col Manzur Elahi, Maj Abu Syeed, Maj Azizul Hakim, Maj Ashraf Hossain, Maj Makbul Hossain and Capt Tanvir Haider.
Asked about the missing of 72 officers as stated by MI Director Brig Gen Mahbub, Gen Sinha said after checks and cross-checks they have confirmed that seven officers are now missing.
He said three unidentified bodies have been kept at Dhaka Medical College Hospital mortuary and their identities could be ascertained after DNA tests.
So far, he said 56 bodies of the army officers and their families were recovered and 40 other officers rescued alive.
About the Prime Minister’s meeting with army officers at Sena Kunja Sunday, he said the officers expressed their pains, worries and resentment to her. The Prime Minister listened to the officers and assured them to resolve those lawfully.
Gen Sina said the Prime Minister also assured the officers that fair trial of the killers will be held as per law, special tribunal will constituted and if necessary law will be passed in parliament for the special tribunal. In reply to a question he said the operation rebel hunt led by army started in a limited way to catch fugitive BDR members.
Meanwhile, government news agency BSS adds that during the briefing, the army official said that the government has decided to rename Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) reorganising the paramilitary troops in view of the massacre of army officers serving the border force.
“The government in principle decided to rename Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) as soon as possible,” the Chief of General Staff said.
He added that no decision was taken what would be the new name of the troops but discussions were underway to fix a new name.
